As Project Director at Beam Camp in Strafford NH, Morgan directs and manages the creation of large-scale architectural installations and experiences with a team of talented specialists and 130 amazing adults and kids over a 3 week period.
"At Beam kids learn to make things happen through fine and manual arts, technology and collaboration. They work together on the spectacular Beam Project while exploring innovative thinking, design and the creative process. Campers engage with our full-time and visiting staff of professional architects, videographers, builders, engineers, designers, and makers of all kinds.
Projects are chosen from dozens of proposals by artists, architects, and big thinkers in our annual international design competition."
Beam Camp is the summer intensive program of Beam Center, based year-round in Brooklyn NY.
A local TV special on the Beam Camp experience can be seen here.

July 2019 Project
Iceberg is a floating sculpture that is simultaneously a place for play and a poetic comment on global warming and our changing environment. 1400 handmade recycled plastic tiles were created, incorporating thermochromic pigment to shift color throughout the day and give the effect of ‘melting’.

"Inspired by a fantastical story blending [local] Parker Mountain lore with the real-life biography of inventor Garrett Morgan, campers and staff constructed a concrete temple housing an Arduino-controlled hall of infinity mirrors and leading to chamber of future dreams."

"The universal play machine is a bespoke and adaptable kinetic sculpture that is also a device for learning - not only in the process of its creation but also in how it can be interacted with when complete. Essentially an oversized flip-book, the system scales up the split-flap display technology first used in airports and train-stations across the world. Exaggerating the analogue nature of the technology, the universal play machine has the capacity to rotate through a sequence of images, sketches, numbers or letters - all created by the campers and even powered by the campers themselves!"

"A cross between a bakery and an outdoor gym that celebrates the ancient art of bread making. Campers employed masonry, metalwork, fermentation, shou sugi ban (a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation) and more. After construction, campers made bread by hauling grain, milling it, kneading and chopping wood for the oven. "
